Recent Talk: BEYOND DELIVERABLES: BRINGING CONTENT STRATEGY TO LIFE

Content Strategy Forum | October 5-7 | Melbourne, Australia

You never want the contribution you make to your company or client to be limited to a stack of deliverables. It feels good to make a plan at the beginning of a project, but no matter how beautiful, detailed, or thought-out your deliverables are, if they don’t shape the website, app, or product you’re building, they’re worth very little.

Whether you call yourself a content strategist or not, strategy is a necessity. But creating a strategy isn’t enough. Putting it into practice has to be a big part of your skill set. Michael will draw on past experiences and case studies to explain how you can take your content strategy from a high-level plan to a practical resource your company or client relies on.

Bringing your content strategy to life can be a big, frustrating, and messy task, but when it helps people in real, practical ways, it’s all worth it.

Recent Workshop: What’s your software saying? Designing interfaces with language

with Andy Welfle

Confab Intensive | September 19-21 | Seattle, Washington

Interface components like buttons, menus, errors, and confirmation messages are built with words, and it’s remarkable how much a consistent voice and tone matter. Are you using an efficient, informative voice, or do you sound more like a quirky, lovable goofball? The appropriate voice builds trust, increases retention, and humanizes interaction.

Learn the best ways to integrate your team’s voice into the design process in a way that’s clear and consistent. You’ll also learn how to validate your decisions through prototyping and testing.

Recent WORKSHOP: Visual Tools for Content Planning and Production

with Scott Kubie

Confab Intensive | September 19-21 | Seattle, Washington

“But where are the wireframes!?”

If you’re having trouble selling content strategy in your organization, steal some pages from the designer's playbook. Visual artifacts like wireframes and prototypes often grab the attention of stakeholders and become the focus of our project processes. The savvy content strategist can use this to his or her advantage by creating visual artifacts to communicate content strategy with greater clarity. Learn how to identify opportunities for visualizing your content, new techniques and deliverables for creating these visuals, and tips on how to apply them in your process.

Recap: Use Tactical Goal-setting to Design the Right Thing

Midwest UX 2015 | Friday, October 2 • 10:30am - 11:10am | Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

I led a 40-minute hands-on session at Midwest UX 2015 aimed at helping designers and other UX professionals accomodate stakeholder feedback during a project.

By using a goal-setting framework, you can better understand and incorporate the feedback of everyone involved in the project.

It was a 20-minute talk, followed by a 20-minute mock stakeholder meeting where participants played different roles on a design team and worked to establish the goals for their project.

My talk begins at minute 19. This is a lightning talk at Confab Central 2014 about how content strategists can use visual techniques to communicate their work more effectively.

This talk about using visual tools to communicate content strategy was originally presented at Confab Central 2014. Later I worked with Scott Kubie to turn it into a workshop.
